The Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana), or Chinese Lantern, is now available at a lower price, ideal for outdoor planting. It thrives in well-drained soil and produces nutritious fruit rich in vitamins A and C. Each plant provides a substantial harvest, boosting gardening and nutrition.

Cape gooseberry thrives outdoors after the last frost when the soil is above 60°F (15°C). Proper timing promotes healthy growth and fruit yield. This tropical plant has soft, downy foliage and papery calyces surrounding cherry-sized fruits with a sweet flavour, valued for culinary and ornamental use. Regular pruning is needed to control its rapid growth and prevent legginess. Maintain temperatures above 10°C in a greenhouse or move outdoors in summer to a sheltered, south-facing spot protected from wind. As it is frost-sensitive, bring it indoors before winter. With proper care, it can overwinter indoors, providing reliable yearly yields.
